In July 2016 we took a trip to Birmingham. We started in Digbeth by the Custard Factory. This building is the old Birds factory in Birmingham that has now been converted into a bohemian Art House which hosts the "City of Colours" every year. This Graffiti competition is fierce and puts Birmingham on the map, gathering talent from across the world to take part in the festival.
After walking around Digbeth we then went through the centre of Birmingham, through the pedestrianised Bullring and up High Street, past the City Hall, the new library and finifhing at the Ikon.

CONTACT SHEET - Birmingham July 2016
From this contact sheet you can see that I took around 150 images. Unfortunately I didn't know how to take photographs at this point, so a number of them are underexposed, out of focus or have bad compositions.
Analysis of Photographs
In this photograph I was trying to capture the similarity between the figures in the Graffiti and the students and teacher from Rushey Mead. I like the way in which there seems to be a dialogue of ignorance between the two.
The leading lines and slight curve of the building lead the eye off into the distance and the large hand of the wood giant seems to be reaching down to pluck the unsuspecting teacher off the street. The signs in the street are very distracting |
This dramatic image combine abstract streaks of colour with the detailed brushwork required in portraiture. The texture of the wall breaks through the image creating a dialogue between the engaging face, the wall and the colourful streaks. The attaction of the photograph comes from the clarity of the colours and detail and the framing of the image. Beacuse the image crops the painting it forces you to focus on one or two areas. Rather than the whole thing.
