The History of the Camera
The Camera is a fairly new object and Photography is a young discipline, but the theory behind the Camera has been used in Art & Design for centuries. By creating a hole in a blacked out room the artist was able to project a 3D image into a 2D space. This was discovered in the Renaissance and used throughout art history. It wasn't until the Victorian era that Chemists using substances like Silver, Cyanide and Potassium were able to capture this reverted image and recreate it. From this photography was born.
Last week we learned about the principles of light by building our own Camera Obscura in the Classroom. By Blacking out the windows and cutting a small hole in the card, we were able to limit the light entering the room. This recreated a upside down image of the outside against the opposite wall. This is how a Camera and our eyeballs work.
WWW: It was a fun exercise and it developed our understanding of light and cameras.
EBI: Unfortunately the light outside was not bright enough to replicate the effect. Next time we will do this in September on a bright, sunny day.
